No Dave Matthews Band Grammy nominations this year

To contact us Click HERE

Dave Matthews Band did not receive any 2012 Grammy nominations.

Fans hoped the Grammys would recognize DMB for Away From the World, its new album that came out in September. But when the Grammy nominations list came out last night, the band’s name was nowhere to be seen. The news left producer Steve Lillywhite disappointed:

Stefan Lessard also weighed in later:

For all its commercial success, DMB still has just one Grammy to its name: the 1997 award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, which went to “So Much to Say.” Dave Matthews also won the 2004 Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for “Gravedigger.”

DMB’s Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King received two 2010 Grammy nominations, for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album, but lost in both categories. Here are the nominees in those categories this year:

Album of the Year

  • El Camino, The Black Keys
  • Some Nights, Fun.
  • Babel, Mumford and Sons
  • Channel Orange, Frank Ocean
  • Blunderbuss, Jack White

Best Rock Album

  • El Camino, The Black Keys
  • Mylo Xyloto, Coldplay
  • The 2nd Law, Muse
  • Wrecking Ball, Bruce Springsteen
  • Blunderbuss, Jack White

On the bright side for DMB, Rolling Stone named Away From the World the 29th best album of 2012.

Brown played “All Along the Watchtower” with DMB to close the regular set. It was the first time he performed with DMB since 2010, when he was a guest at the band’s shows at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. and Churchill Downs in Louisville  Kentucky.

Last night’s concert also featured a guest appearance by Kofi Burbridge of the Derek Trucks Band, who played keyboards on “Jimi Thing.”

Boyd Tinsley reconnects with fans: An interview

To contact us Click HERE

In just a matter of months, Boyd Tinsley has become the most accessible and interactive member of Dave Matthews Band. He regularly converses with his Twitter followers, a 25,000-person strong group known as Narnia, and he has taken to holding impromptu post-concert meet-and-greets with fans. In this first of a two-part interview, conducted during DMB’s off day in Boston, Boyd talks about reconnecting with fans and their reception to his film, “Faces in the Mirror.”

Welcome to Boston. How do you like playing here?

We love playing here, man. Boston fans love us, and they show it, and it’s beautiful, you know? I love how people are so honest about what they say up here.

We’re like that with our sports teams, too. It also goes the other way. When we don’t like you, we really don’t like you.

[Laughs.] I’m glad to be on the good side, then.

When you have a whole day off like today, how do you spend it?

A tour like this is pretty non-stop, and it’s hard for me to do anything on a day off other than just kick it. We’re playing a lot of dates in a short period of time. Usually I like to walk around, just spend an hour or so walking around a place when we get there, but I just haven’t had a chance to do that.

Also, on this tour I’ve been doing these after-show gatherings, so that’s been a part of my day. It’s really cool, and it’s such a beautiful way to end a day.

Where did you get the idea to do those interactive meetups?

More and more people have been asking, “We’d like a ["Faces in the Mirror"] screening here. We’d like a screening there.” And it’d be impossible to do screenings for everybody, at least in a short period of time. But I can get out and at least meet people. And that’s been as cool for me as it is for them.

I haven’t talked to you since the film came out. What has the reception been like?

People really love this film. It’s interesting going to the screening and sitting with people as they watch the film. I feel so good when I look around and I see people react the way that I intended them to react to the movie: to laugh here, or to cry here, or to whatever. It just lets me know that, wow, we got it right.

Does Narnia give you a greater appreciation for the connection that you have with fans and what your music means to them?

Yes, it absolutely does. In the early days of the band, it was a lot easier to interact with the crowd, and I did a lot. And I almost forgot about that. One of the things that happens as you get bigger is, you sort of lose more contact with the fans. It’s weird. You sort of become, a little bit, in this bubble.

When you were starting off, did it ever cross your mind that the band would become so big?

I still don’t think about it. [Laughs.] There’s so many things perspective-wise that I don’t think I’ve really taken a lot of time to think about. And one is what we were talking about earlier: knowing the fans and knowing what the music means to them. That is something that I guess I’ve known. People have told me that. But I guess I really have gotten to know a lot more people a lot better, so I understand it. I’m beyond just knowing it. Now I understand it.

Boyd Tinsley on DMB’s ‘fresh new start’

boyd tinsleyAs 2012 comes to a close, much of Dave Matthews Band’s 2013 plans are still up in the air — except for one crucial part.

“I asked about what we’re doing next year in the band, and the only thing I know for sure is the summer tour,” Boyd Tinsley said. “But for the rest of the year, I have no idea.”

In this final part of our interview with Boyd, he talks about the potential for a DMB B-sides album, how certain songs evolve and what it’s like being in the band in 2012.

The show [in Boston] was crazy. Do you ever see the setlist and know it’s going to be great before you even step on stage?

From the setlist, you have a good idea of what the gig’s gonna be like. The only thing is, we just gotta go up there and deliver. When I looked at the setlist, I was like, “Wow, I’m gonna be working tonight.” I didn’t look at the setlist until about a half hour before the show, so I was surprised.

Everybody had a lot of fun. Dave was so funny. I’ve never laughed so hard in my life on stage. There’s nothing like that. In this band, that can happen. You don’t even think you’re working at all. This is my job. How awesome is that? This has been a really great year for this band. Maybe the break that we had, maybe that helped. Maybe that sort of gave us a fresh new start.

How do you feel the Away From the World songs have fit in, now that you’re playing them all live?

They really blend in really well with the rest of our songs. It might have something to do with Lillywhite. It might have something to do with, particularly, the arrangements in songs. The way these songs are constructed are in the Lillywhite way.

Is revisiting older material in the studio something you’d be open to?

We have a s—load of it, man. We put it up on a board one time, and I was like, oh my God. That was at the beginning of GrooGrux King. We were sitting with Rob Cavallo, and it was like, how are we gonna approach the album? Are we gonna do some older stuff that we haven’t recorded, or are we gonna start from scratch? We decided, let’s just see if we can work up some ideas for some new stuff, and that’s obviously what we did.

I love it when we start from scratch. I love it when we create a song in the studio and record that. It’s just magical. You get to create stuff in the moment. There’s a lot of stuff on this album that are like first or second takes. That kind of magic happens when you’re really excited.

Would it be harder to capture that magic if you were revisiting songs that you didn’t record the first time?

In a sense, yeah. A particular kind of magic, yeah. To go to a song that you’ve already made, it already has roadblocks, or a map at least. It’s possible to take a song that you’ve already done in a certain kind of way and make into a different thing, which is good, and we’ve done that. I’m trying to think of examples…

“Two Step” sounds nothing like it does on the album now.

You know what’s funny about “Two Step?” It went off that way, but it feels like, to me, after all these years, it’s starting to go back — particularly the way we’re treating the intro. It used to have this constant, driving thing, but now — me, Dave, Tim and I guess Fonzie — there’s definitely this very hushed vibe to it. That really sort of comes out of the recording. That had that sort of mysterious vibe to it. The band is playing great. It’s fun as s— to be up on stage with Dave Matthews Band.

As far as touring, are there places that you’ve never been that you’d like to go to?

Everybody’s saying Japan. “That’s just the place to go.” “You gotta go to Japan.” I’d love to check out, maybe, South Africa. It’s something that we have definitely talked about over the years, and we just never have done it. But it’d be really cool if we did.

The two singers filmed the sketch Dec. 3, when Dave Matthews Band performed “Rooftop” on “Fallon,” but it didn’t air during that day’s show. DMB also played “Christmas Song” at that taping; that performance will air on tonight’s episode.

WINNER OF THE 2012 SXSW GRAND JURY PRIZE FOR DOCUMENTARY

SnagFilms Presents . .  BEWARE OF MR. BAKER Opening Friday, January 25th - Los Angeles & Select Cities

Jay Bulger traveled to South Africa to make a movie about one of the founding fathers of modern rock, Ginger Baker. Ginger is known for playing drums in the bands Cream and Blind Faith, almost as well known as he is for his bad temper.  Jay has chronicled this journey in his Directorial debut, Beware of Mr. Baker.

SYNOPSIS | BEWARE OF MR. BAKERThe film is a sad, hilarious, sometimes tender, sometimes frightening visit with Cream’s Ginger Baker, the legendary scarlet-maned, hell-raising drummer—a rock ‘n’ roll monster if ever there was one. This no-holds-barred portrait of the man referred to as rock’s first great drummer (and perhaps still its best) lets him tell his own story, intercut with footage of his continent-hopping life, from London to L.A., Nigeria, Italy, South Africa, and (way) beyond.  Baker may have broken the mold musically, but his violent, dyspeptic mood swings, fueled by a multi-decade heroin addiction, went a long way to making him persona non grata even among the music greats who still revere his work. Eric Clapton, John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols), Charlie Watts (of the Rolling Stones), Stewart Copeland (of The Police), and Lars Ulrich (of Metallica), Baker’s four wives, and three grown children all have something to say about him: “He’s a force of nature,” “he’s the greatest drummer any of us had ever heard,” “he’s mad,” and “he’s fairly consistently horrible” are just a few of them. Winner of the Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2012 South By Southwest Film Festival.

Hillsides in Pasadena turns 100 in 2013

To contact us Click HERE
Hillsides, a premier provider dedicated to improving the overall well-being and functioning of vulnerable children and families, is celebrating a major milestone in 2013 -- it is turning 100 years old.  Over the course of a century, Hillsides has provided quality, progressive and collaborative programs and services to more than 110,000 individuals in Southern California.
From its inception in 1913, Hillsides broke the mold.   Hillsides was founded by a compassionate young Deaconess, Evelyn Wile, who was on a mission to reform the orphanages of her day.  She took it upon herself to open a home for neglected and abandoned children that rejected the typical institutional model of care at the time.  Instead she preferred a campus setting with cottages so the children could live and flourish in a loving, home environment.
Over the years, Hillsides developed the capacity to always look for additional ways to best serve children and bring out their full potential.   The organization relocated to 17 rolling acres in Pasadena and switched from being an orphanage to a residential center that provides specialized care for at-risk and fragile children and youth.

In addition, Hillsides established the Education Center, which offers individualized educational plans for students with special needs or behavioral problems.   The organization also launched several Family Resource Centers that offer crucial mental health services to families throughout Los Angeles and Pasadena.  And it created an innovative program, Youth Moving On, to help former foster children successfully transition to adulthood.   These four core programs of Hillsides revive spirits, renew trust, and restore hope to over 7,000 individuals a year.
In order to mark 100 years of service and to develop a strategic roadmap to the future, Hillsides has created a new mission statement, which is: to provide high quality care, advocacy, and innovative services that promote safe, permanent environments where young people can thrive.   Hillsides has also redefined and recommitted to the core values it was founded on:  Individual Integrity, Quality Care, Innovation, People, Impact, Advocacy, and Accountability.
“Much has changed in the last century,” said Joseph M. Costa, Hillsides chief executive  officer.   “Pasadena has grown into a large, thriving metropolis, our campus has expanded  to include numerous new buildings, and we’ve developed an extensive network of services throughout the community.  Yet some things remain the same – quality care, innovation, and advocacy.  These  principals are the foundation for  the next 100 years.”
Hillsides has dozens of exciting events planned for 2013.   One of the biggest of the year is just around the corner:  Hillsides Centennial Gala, held Saturday night, February 23, at The Langham, Huntington, Pasadena, which will feature celebrities such as Emmy award-winning actress Jean Smart, NBC4 weathercaster Fritz Coleman, comedian George Lopez and talk show host Dr. Drew Pinsky.

Hillsides will also be launching a social media campaign, “100 Faces of Hillsides,” where it will feature 100  individuals who have a connection to Hillsides, and a “100 Ways to Give” campaign. To learn more and be a part of the centennial celebration, visit www.Hillsides.org.

A Short History of Hillsides:
1913:   Hillsides began as an orphanage for 13 children in a home on Avenue 28 in what is now Highland Park.   The founder of Hillsides, a Deaconess  in the Episcopal Church, Evelyn Wile, scrubbed the house herself to prepare it for the children.
1918:  Hillsides moved to three homey cottages on the site of our current Residential Treatment Services on Avenue 64 in Pasadena.   Here, on 17 rolling acres, the children could receive the fresh air, space, and loving care they needed to thrive.
1927:    The Administrative Building was completed.
1942:   Due to World War II, the number of children at Hillsides surged.   Despite food rationing,    Hillsides’  kitchen passed inspection by the state dietitian with flying colors – an A+.
1960:  The home began  to shift from an orphanage to a safe refuge for children in the foster care system or those suffering from abuse or emotional troubles.   This new focus was heralded as “a revolution in child agencies.”
1962:   Hillsides celebrated its 50th birthday by ground-breaking for a new junior boys’ cottage and a swimming pool.
1973:   Hillsides opened  a satellite house for teenage girls.  A second off-campus home for boys opened  two years later, in 1975.
1982:   Hillsides opened  its Education Center.  That same year it also created the Family Resource Centers to address the needs of the children’s families.  Eight years later, in 1990, it created its first off-campus mental health facility in Echo Park to expand its aid to the community.
2000:   The campus added a children’s resource center, library, health services, new classrooms and two new cottages.
2004:  Youth Moving On began.
2007:  Hillsides integrated “Wraparound”  Services  as an added layer of support to keep children in their homes and find children permanent homes.
2013:  Hillsides, which now provides educational and behavioral services throughout Southern California,  celebrates 100 years of helping at-risk children and families.

Give Me All Your Luvin' feat. M.I.A. & Nicki .. - lyrics

L-U-V Madonna
Y-O-U You wanna
I see you coming and I don’t wanna know your name
L-U-V Madonna
I see you coming and you’re gonna have to change the game
Y-O-U You wanna
Would you like to try?
Give me a reason why
Give me all that you got
Maybe you’ll do fine
As long as you don’t lie to me
And pretend to be what you’re not

Don’t play the stupid game
Cause I’m a different kind of girl
Every record sounds the same
You’ve got to step into my world
Give me all your love and give me your love
Give me all your love today
Give me all your love and give me your love
Let’s forget about time
And dance our lives away

L-U-V Madonna
Y-O-U You wanna
Keep trying don’t give up, it’s if you want it bad enough
L-U-V Madonna
It’s right in front of you, now tell me what you’re thinking of
Y-O-U You wanna
In another place, at a different time
You can be my lucky star
We can drink some wine
Burgundy is fine
Let’s drink the bottle every drop

Don’t play the stupid game
Cause I’m a different kind of girl
Every record sounds the same
You’ve got to step into my world
Give me all your love and give me your love
Give me all your love today
Give me all your love and give me your love
Let’s forget about time
And dance our lives away

You have all the L-U-V
I gave you everything you need
Now it’s up to Y-O-U
Are you the one, shall we proceed?

Don’t play the stupid game
Cause I’m a different kind of girl
Every record sounds the same
You’ve got to step into my world
Give me all your love and give me your love
Give me all your love today
Give me all your love and give me your love
Let’s forget about time
And dance our lives away

Well, the world didn't end on December 22 so if you're looking for a way to ring in the new year with great music in the Triangle, there is no shortage of choices for you this year.

The big Triangle event is always First Night in downtown Raleigh. This year's event will feature a headline set by local rising stars Delta Rae. The event is happening in venues all over downtown and other performers include Jonathan Scales Fourchestra, the Cool John Ferguson Trio and many more.

Raleigh's two local metal clubs, DIVEbar and Volume 11 Tavern will not only be ringing in the new year, but will be hosting their final shows at each club on New Year's Eve.  DIVEbar will have Bedowyn, The Hell No, Bad Idea and The Villians while Volume 11 will have BONZ, Drill, End Of Days and The Omega Project.

For something a little swankier, The Cotton Room in Durham will be hosting an event with The Foreign Exchange, DJ Apple Juice Kid, Al Strong Quintet, Marcus Anderson and Yolanda Rabun.

You could also head over to Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh to see the North Carolina Symphony perform big band classics with conductor Jeff Tyzik and drummer Dave Mancini.

The original lineup of Barefoot Manner will play The Pour House in Raleigh with The Morning After.

There are many more great events around the Triangle. Check out the list broken down by city below and let us know if we've missed something cool that's going on.
