The Toxic Avenger releases album

To contact us Click HERE
French DJ and producer Simon Delacroix, better known as The Toxic Avenger, produces music that speaks to the darkest depths of the imagination, fusing a chilling mix of pulsing electronic music and crime scene noir. Following the release of two buzzed-about singles last year, The Toxic Avenger has unleashed his first full-length album, ANGST, today via Little Owl Recordings. Bursting with the sinister, genre-bending sound for which Delacroix is known, ANGST is now available on iTunes and all other digital retailers.

Album track “3,2,1” is a thumping, ghostly track that offers a glimpse into Toxic’s dark world with a shimmering ethereal breakdown.

ANGST opens with “Nu 1553,” an energetic track that takes listeners on a jolting ride with punctuating bursts of synth and an erratic beat. “Angst One” picks up right where the opening track leaves off before slowing into an eerie, unsettling swirl of strings that shriek with a sense of urgency and forewarning. “Alien Summer” is an electro-pop gem with airy guest vocals by Annie floating above a pulsating dance beat. Vocal melodies shine on “Never Stop,” with its infectious, anthem-like chorus hovering above layers of synth that cut through the silence like a knife. The North American version of ANGST also features special remixes of “3,2,1” by Beat Torrent and Equateur.

In addition to sharing stages with artists like Diplo, MSTRKRFT, Bloody Beetroots and Crystal Castles, The Toxic Avenger has made a name for himself remixing tracks by Ladytron, Benny Benasi, Chromeo and others. Stay tuned for more exciting news from The Toxic Avenger as he spreads his reign of terror across the US!

KEN O'MALLEY . . . "Ireland's Emigrants and the Atlantic Crossing"

From the creaking boards of the decks of the "coffin ships" of the Famine years of the 1840's to the transatlantic liners of the mid 20th century, the story of Ireland's people leaving home is brought to life in story and song by Ken O'Malley, himself an emigrant in the 1970's. The "American Wake" was a farewell to those who left Ireland's shores, never to return. The New World waited, though not always with the outstretched hand of welcome. Nonetheless, the Irish survived and with tenacity they built their future and that of their new land.

Dublin born Ken O’Malley's rich, resonant voice and engaging stage presence have delighted audiences for over thirty years."He holds nothing back. Whether singing a passionate ballad, playing a solo on the mandolin, or explaining the gloriously sad history of Erin his homeland, Ken O’Malley is all-in, wide open to the world, and as true as an arrow’s flight. Ken’s fine tenor voice could carry him through a show all alone, but he backs himself beautifully on guitar and mandolin. . . .His wonderful wit and good humor draw us in and carry us along, and the beauty of his songs, both traditional and original, fills us with irresistible joy."

With songs in both English and Irish Gaelic, a Ken O'Malley performance is suitable for all ages and has something for everyone. As one longtime fan says, “the songs Ken sings touch all of us, Irish or not, to the very core of the human heart”. Web Page: http://www.kenomalley.com

Central Coast Oyster Festival announces music lineup for June 16

To contact us Click HERE
While the focus at the inaugural Central Coast Oyster Festival is definitely the world-renowned oysters of Morro Bay, an impressive and widely varied line-up of headlining bands is also scheduled to perform, including viral internet sensation, Walk Off The Earth.

The multi-talented Canadian indie band, whose cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” is performed by five musicians on one guitar, has dominated YouTube with over 100 million hits, and has been featured on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. Walk Off The Earth was recently signed to Columbia Records and will perform at the Central Coast Oyster Festival as part of its 2012 international tour.

“We are so lucky to have attracted the likes of Walk Off The Earth,” said Jacqueline Delaney, Marketing and Sales Director for OPTIONS Family of Services. “They will complement the Oyster Festival’s off-beat, high-end culture nicely.”

Also performing as part of the Oyster Festival’s full-day entertainment schedule is Bay Area progressive bluegrass band, Hot Buttered Rum, which has performed at such exclusive festivals as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Newport Folk Festival, and South by Southwest. The San Francisco Chronicle has said of the band, “Few things rejuvenate the soul like a warm fireside drink after an exhausting day in the snow. Hot Buttered Rum has that effect.”

Local live electronic dance music group TROPO will also bring its high energy to the Central Coast Oyster Festival. The band features a unique blend of violin, percussion, spectral pads, and bass that produces a vibe both tribal and urban. TROPO’s atmospheric sound regularly draws a crowd of hoopers and fire dancers that will attend this event and perform, complemented by art installations from annual Burning Man hooping posse, Spin Cycle. Local group The Neon Russell Band is also scheduled to perform its own brand of “redneck blues” and obscure covers.

Tickets for this full-day experience of all things authentically Central Coast are $20 and are available at www.CentralCoastOysterFestival.org. The first annual Central Coast Oyster Festival is sponsored by the Morro Bay Oyster Company, the Morro Bay Golf Course, the City of Morro Bay, Tap It Brewing, Element Solar, KRUSH Radio, New Times, The Cities of Los Osos/Baywood Park, Cayucos Abalone Farm, Guerrilla Gardening Club, and ECO Rotary for a Zero Waste Event.

The Central Coast Oyster Festival is a celebration of local oysters to benefit OPTIONS Family of Services, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people with disabilities achieve their goals, dreams and rightful place as full citizens of their communities. The Festival features the delectable oysters of the Morro Bay Oyster Company and fresh local produce in the hands of the area’s best chefs, paired with award-winning local wine, beer, and spirits. In addition, the event includes a spirited oyster-shucking competition, live entertainment, and an enticing “Aphrodisiac Lounge.” The first annual Central Coast Oyster Festival is scheduled for June 16 from 12-8 P.M. at the Morro Bay Golf Course.

Theatre Bizarre Architect John Dunivant Pays Homage To The Cramps With Human Fly Print On Sale

To contact us Click HERE
Grown out of his love of roadside attractions, odditoriums, mystery spots and the like, Dunivant is driven to recapture the childhood wonder and danger he felt each summer in the musty corners of those shabby, cinderblock buildings that stand just off of the beaten path.

"The piece was created for said show, the lyrics I chose were "I'm an unzipped fly and I don't know why", "I got 96 tears in my 96 eyes" from "Human Fly" by The Cramps. These Human Fly's have been appearing in my work for a while and are little delinquents. The more-human of the two brothers was always jealous of his sister's ability to fly and all of the attention she received so he enjoyed torturing her. The older brother has his finger hanging out because it's what Lux would do. Or, he'd probably just have his dick out, but I thought this was funnier." - John Dunivant

Brouwerij West "Tripel" Beer Label by James Flames

To contact us Click HERE

Over the past few years smaller brewery's have had poster artists do labels for them. Marq Spusta, Tara McPherson and Ken Taylor have all created killer art work. You can now add James Flames to that list.

Details from James Flames on his label:

I've recently had the great pleasure of creating some beer label artwork for Brouwerij West (pronounced "brewery" west) out in Southern California. This is the first one, for their "Tripel" beer - so excited to finally show it off.

Brouwerij West is a small brewery run by Brian Mercer, and they specialize in authentic Belgian beer brewing. They have a few varieties available on tap at the best watering holes in Southern Cali, but "Tripel" is the first variety that's available bottled. It's now available on the shelves at Whole Foods and other fine stores out West. As for the artwork, I wanted to play with the idea of threes, being that it's named "Tripel" - and I've always loved those Russian matryoshka dolls (the ones that open to reveal smaller dolls inside), so I came up with this scene of a face within a face within a face. All black ink work with grey tones and a touch of Aqua in her eyes. I'm pretty psyched with how it came out. The paper that the labels are printed on has a really awesome satin/matte finish, and the bottles themselves are a traditional German style.
One of the coolest aspects of this and all their upcoming labels is that they are all limited editions. This batch of "Tripel" was bottled and labeled as an edition of 6500 - so when they're gone, they're gone. Then a new label will take it's place. Pretty neat idea.
I've already finished another label for them for another variety, which should be out soon - as well as some really cool coasters. Stay tuned and I'll post all that art as soon as they're available. In the meantime, grab a few of these bottles while they're still around. It's really good stuff. The official description of the beer says:
"Our Tripel pours a hazy deep gold with a creamy head. Upfront aromas of fresh plums, orange, white flowers and a hint of hay evolve into aromas of caramel malt and cola as the glass warms. A very balanced flavor profile and a creamy mouthfeel lead into a light malt sweetness with a final transition into a hint of warming alcohol and soft drying bitterness."

13 Pieces of Advice for Freelance Designers & Illustrators

To contact us Click HERE
This was originally posted by Army of Cats. Since I have many young artist that read the blog and ask me questions I thought this might be helpful. One bit of personal opinion I will interject is this, just because you know how to use photoshop does make you an artist. Step away from the computer get out there, get dirty and create something with your hands.

1. HOW TO GET THE BALL ROLLING

Know the direction you want the ball to go, and start pushing. The key is not to wait around for someone to get the ball rolling for you.
I come across many students who seemingly get so into the routine of being assigned work by a tutor, handing it in to receive comments and criticism, and then dutifully receiving the next brief, that when they leave education they innocently wonder where the next task will come from. It’s a competitive industry; it’s unrealistic to assume someone is going to come along  and give you a ‘leg up’
Start thinking about the direction you need to go in before you leave education and start working towards that now.

2. BUSINESS SKILLS & UNDERSTANDING VALUE

Know your market. Devote some of your time towards researching about how the industry works. There are lots of blogs and books available about the business skills needed to be a successful designer, illustrator, animator, etc. Don’t be one of those students who I get emails from asking the most short-sighted and banal questions which they could easily answer for themselves. Be proactive! Read up on this stuff! If you plan to freelance and don’t understand tax basics or how to keep accounts, then you are lacking much needed skills.

3. WHAT IS IT FOR?

This is a great question to ask of pieces of work that you see in order to start understanding the commercial application of illustration and design. What is the purpose of the work? Who is the target audience? How will it make money or create value for the client/artist? What does it set out to achieve, and is it successful?
Read blogs and look at the work of established creatives – often they will point out the objective of the work they have produced. Getting your head round the commercial application of design/illustration can give you a huge early advantage in your career. Which leads us nicely on to…

4. IF YOU CAN’T GET CLIENTS, MAKE THEM UP!

I have no formal qualifications in art or design. When I got my first design job, all the other applicants had design degrees, yet I was successful at getting the job. Why? Because I had a portfolio of client work, and they had portfolios of school work.
Once you are able to better understand the commercial applications of the work you want to do, start working on examples for your portfolio. Make up the client briefs if you have to, just make them realistic with the purpose of being a case study to show you understand the application of the work.
I highly recommend the book “Creative Workshop: 80 Challenges to Sharpen Your Design Skills” by David Sherwin for generating ideas and improving your skills.

5. DESIGN COMPETITIONS / SPEC WORK / WORKING FOR FREE

I, like many professional designers, wholeheartedly discourage involvement in design competitions, crowd sourcing, or spec (speculative work) where the final design is to be used for any sort of commercial purposes.
This basically means any endeavour where you are being asked to submit your creative work, time, and experience for free, but with the promise that you may get some sort of reward if your design is ‘picked’, or that you will gain exposure, or a great piece for your portfolio. Sometimes you are even expected to PAY to submit work.
Fundamentally, what it boils down to is this: if a business is asking you to do free work, how much do they actually value your work? Do you really want to spend time working for someone who considers your work and time to be worth absolutely nothing?
You wouldn’t go into a restaurant and ask 10 chefs to each prepare 10 separate meals with the intention of only paying for the meal you enjoyed the most. Likewise it is just as unreasonable and unethical for clients to employ this method of soliciting work.
This process often results in a poor end result for the client, and also it damages and devalues the work of the industry as a whole. Spec work is a widely debated topic and one which creatives and clients alike sometimes struggle to understand fully, so if you’re still not sure what it is, then read up about it. http://www.no-spec.com is a good place to start.
I have seen blogs and other online articles advising young designers/illustrators to initially do work for free in order to get a portfolio together. Don’t do this. It is absolutely terrible advice. Value your work and the time you put into it. If you don’t value your work, you may find yourself stuck with an endless stream of ‘clients’ who don’t value your work either.
Heed the advice of Jessica Hische, author of the wonderful http://shouldiworkforfree.com. Being asked to give your work away in return for ‘exposure’ or ‘a good portfolio piece’ is “the most toxic line of bullshit anyone will ever feed you.”

6. GET THE BASICS RIGHT

Put together an online portfolio where people can see your work. Make it easy for people to contact you. Put your contact details in an email signature as well as on your site. If you decide to work under a ‘studio name’ that isn’t your actual name, avoid unprofessional or offensive names. These are all very simple points but I frequently come across designers/illustrators who can’t even get the basics right.

7. DEVELOP A PROCESS/WORKFLOW

Learn some basic planning and Project Management skills to enable you to plan out any given project you might be approached with. Not only will this help you organise the work, but it will be vital in providing accurate quotes to your client. Use a Work Breakdown Structure to work out what tasks need to be completed in a given project. If you are working to a deadline, then divide up the time and make sure you have enough time for each task in order to deliver the final work on time. Where appropriate, explain your process to your client and give them an indication of when they can expect certain deliverables.
When you complete a project, take a little time to self-review and look at what worked and what didn’t What can you streamline and improve so you can be more efficient next time?

8. TIME SAVING TOOLS

If you find yourself doing repetitive tasks then explore better/faster ways of doing them. A simple Google search might save you hours of work in the long run! Use methods like Time Boxing to control and focus how you spend your time.

9. CONTRACT / WORK AGREEMENT

Don’t undertake work without a contract – especially with new clients. I cannot stress this enough.
Your contract, or Work Agreement, doesn’t have to be overly complicated, it just has to be a way to formally acknowledge the project description, the agreed payment terms, time-scales, as well as the appropriate Usage Rights for the client (i.e. if you’re being paid to do a t-shirt design, the client should not get usage rights to create prints or stickers of the artwork).
There are lots of resources online and in books to help you put a contract together. Put a bit of time and effort into researching and writing one. Don’t worry that the contract will scare off clients – the only ones it will scare off were the ones who were planning to shaft you! Professionals use contracts; make it your standard practice.

10. DEVELOPING A STYLE

When you’re still early in your career, don’t worry about trying to develop a style. That will come with time and experience. Experiment and try out different mediums. Broaden out. This may be hard to hear but your early work will suck in ways you may not see until you develop an eye and understanding that comes with experience. Just keep working and improving.

11. REFINE YOUR IDEAS

Learn how to REFINE your work and ideas. In many situations a simpler idea or concept will be far more successful than a complicated one. Imagine a gold prospector from the Old West – when he is panning for gold, he is sifting out the crap and looking to leave only the gold behind. Imagine a jeweller polishing a valuable trinket or jewel – he is removing that outer layer of dirt and dust to let the good stuff shine through.
It’s far too easy to ‘overdo’ good design/illustration work by adding too much to it. When it comes to refining and polishing, instead ask yourself what can you remove? Look for ways to discard the superfluous and leave behind the core design, message or concept.

12. DON’T BE PUT OFF BY TALENT OUT THERE / DON’T WORRY ABOUT FEELING LIKE A FAKE!

This can be a tough one. It is easy to be discouraged when focusing on the successes of others or the mind-blowing quantity and quality of work out there in Internet Land. Do not give in to doubt and distress! There are lots of opportunities out there so keep working and it will pay off. Focus on improving the delivery and quality of service for your clients – you might not be able to be the greatest in your field, but you can still be the greatest to you clients.
When starting out, everyone has to deal with self-doubt and the sneaky feeling that you are ‘faking it’. This is a natural part of being inexperienced so don’t let it get to you. It means you are learning something new, challenging yourself and making the transition from shaky newbie to stalwart professional!

13. BE HONEST, BE POSITIVE, HAVE INTEGRITY, CELEBRATE QUALITY

I firmly believe that your attitude to your work, your clients, and your peers can have a huge impact on your success in all aspects of work and life. While being positive doesn’t guarantee you clients, being negative is certainly a good way to make them avoid you. Strong ethics and professional integrity might not seem like they add obvious value to the service you provide. These aspects are in fact priceless and will strengthen your reputation and gain you word of mouth referral work.
Strive to be honest, reliable and professional and be proud of the quality of service you can provide.Tweet

Sam Jackson suggests hitting a 'big bud of Hulk' before seeing The Avengers

To contact us Click HERE
I'd like to know how many interviews Samuel L. Jackson had given before this one, because I can almost hear him thinking "I've HAD IT with these MOTHERFUCKING QUESTIONS about the MOTHERFUCKING AVENGERS!" During a chat with the Reelz Channel, Jackson twists the Q-and-A conversation into something more "High Times" than Marvel Comics. Every question literally goes to pot as Jackson riffs on "Hulk weed" while the hipster interviewer sweats through his pocket square. "You should see 'The Avengers' after you hit one great big bud of Hulk," Jackson says. "Because this movie is a MOTHERFUCKER! YES!"  I saw it last night straight it was good. Several people on Twitter I asked suggested not seeing the 3-D version, so I didn't

Damien Hirst faces eight new claims of plagiarism

To contact us Click HERE
A detail from Damien Hirst's In the Name of the Father which is claimed to be based on John LeKay's earlier This is My Body, This Is My Blood.

From formaldehyde-immersed sharks to diamond-encrusted skulls, Damien Hirst has become used to taking flak from traditionalists.
Less than welcome have been the accusations of plagiarism, the latest of which were detailed today with claims that no fewer than 15 works produced over the years by the self-styled enfant terrible have been allegedly "inspired" by others.
While Hirst has previously faced accusations that works including his diamond skull came from the imagination of other artists, the new allegations include his "crucified sheep", medicine cabinets, spin paintings, spot paintings, installation of a ball on an air-jet, his anatomical figure and cancer cell images.
Charles Thomson, the artist and co-founder of the Stuckists, a group campaigning for traditional artistry, collated the number of plagiarism claims relating to Hirst's work for the latest issue of the Jackdaw art magazine.
He came up with 15 examples, with eight said to be new instances of plagiarism. The tally includes the medicine cabinets that Hirst first displayed in 1989, and its development in 1992 - a room-size installation called Pharmacy.
"Joseph Cornell displayed a cabinet with bottles on shelves called Pharmacy in 1943," said Thomson. Nor were Hirst's spin paintings or his installation of a ball on a jet of air original, he said, noting that both were done in the 1960s.
"Hirst puts himself forward as a great artist, but a lot of his work exists only because other artists have come up with original ideas which he has stolen," said Thomson. "Hirst is a plagiarist in a way that would be totally unacceptable in science or literature."
Aggrieved artists include John LeKay, a Briton who says he first thought of nailing a lamb's carcass to wood like a cross in 1987, only to see it reproduced by Hirst. Lekay previously claimed in 2007 that he had been producing jewel-encrusted skulls since 1993, before Hirst did so. Lori Precious, an American, says she first arranged butterfly wings into patterns to suggest stained-glass windows in 1994, years before Hirst.
Imitation may be flattery, but not when Hirst is taking both the financial and artistic credit for their ideas, say Lekay and Precious. LeKay has never sold anything above £3,500, while Hirst's set of three crucified sheep was a reported £5.7m. Precious's butterflies sold for £6,000 against Hirst's version for £4.7m.
While Hirst is one of Britain's richest men, LeKay cannot live off his art. Accusing Hirst of being dishonest about where he gets his ideas, he said: "He should just tell the truth."
Although LeKay recognises that artists have always found inspiration in each other, he says the great ones adapt ideas to create works with their own individual and original stamp.
He said: "Damien sees an idea, tweaks it a little bit, tries to make it more commercial. He's not like an artist inspired by looking inwards. He looks for ideas from other people. It's superficial. Put both [crucified sheep] together and … it's the same thing."
In the 1990s, they were friends and shared exhibitions, which is when Hirst may have seen his sheep. Since then, LeKay has become more interested in Buddhism than material wealth, so he does not plan to seek compensation.
Precious recalled her pain at seeing Hirst's butterflies in a newspaper: "My artist friends and collectors called to tell me they couldn't believe the similarities between Hirst's work and mine, and … at first I too thought it was my work."
Although the patterns are not identical, she said: "It's the same material (butterfly wings) and the same idea (recreations of stained-glass windows)."
Without the funds to pursue legal action, she no longer produces butterfly works.
It emerged in 2000 that Hirst agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to head off legal action for breach of copyright by the designer and makers of a £14.99 toy which bore a resemblance to his celebrated 20ft bronze sculpture, Hymn.
David Lee, the editor of the Jackdaw, says Hirst's compensation was an admission of guilt. "The fact he was willing to fork out the money is an indication that he knew he was plagiarising the guy's work."
Hirst declined to comment.
